Students attend music classes twice weekly. They explore music through song, dance and movement and the use of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. Third grade students study the recorder and fourth and fifth grade students have the option to participate weekly in band, jazz band and orchestra.
In the 3rd grade, students participate in 10 weeks of a “Dance in Schools” interactive movement program offered by the San Francisco Ballet. At the end of the instruction period, some students are selected to receive scholarships for a school year’s worth of instruction with the San Francisco Ballet School.
Clarendon also partners with Adventures in Music (AIM) for four assemblies and a trip to the San Francisco Symphony for most classrooms.
Second Community hosts an annual Winter Sing-a-Long in December as well as a Spring Concert showcasing student’s music work. Students can also show off their talent at the very popular annual talent show.
